I just went through another seminar and course about who or what the entrepreneur mindset is all about. To say I came away most disappointed is an understatement. A great presentation was simply spoiled by the definition and the story of the life of a typical entrepreneur. Why? Well, I asked myself, someone who has been an entrepreneur since childhood if I was such a person as described? An emphatic ‘NO’ was my answer and as memories of my mentors who were so famously successful, were also entrepreneurs since childhood. This presenter was unfortunately, still quite unfortunate. How can I agree with his justifications?

Who Entrepreneurs Really Are

Entrepreneur Mindset - A Warm Island Holidaying Buisness

There have been and will be many descriptions of who entrepreneurs are. Go to school and textbooks lay claim to the immutable and copyrighted definitive descriptions of entrepreneurs. One may say that entrepreneurs are people who take an idea to create a need to fill a vacant or created market place. There are many more permutations but, you understand the descriptive point, but really what does it mean to you? Have lived and experienced the life of an entrepreneur? Even if a parent is one, but you have not filled those shoes, you simply cannot comprehend the full scope and multi-dimensional experience of that very special and often misunderstood person.

So, how would I describe an entrepreneur is quite a complex process because without experiencing life as one, how can anyone appreciate being one?

In reality, the entrepreneur is a very misunderstood if not elusive beast. Elusive, because there is no one size fits all description. Worse, there are often the despicable descriptions that are really no more than open lies about the life of an entrepreneur being a generally unethical one. Remember the text books proclaiming ‘caveat emptor’ or buyer beware? Whether deliberate or ignorant, that has been the common ideal. But in these days of massive loss of employment, being your own boss is the only way to put food on the table, clothe the children and a roof over your heads.

Perhaps a better way to describe an entrepreneur and to try getting into their minds is in observing what they do. You will see that the most successful in what they do, is that they become the result of the fruits of their labours.

1) I had mentors who were true entrepreneurs who built themselves up from nothing to become tycoons and the mandarins of their time. They started with dealing with scrap metals, selling packaged cooked food, etc. And yes, they became the respected citizens and financial elders of their time.

2) A gardener who worked for me did this business for 3 decades and retired as a gardener of choice for his knowledge of plants and soil conditions. He was Mr. Green Thumbs to everyone.

3) A food seller or hawker of a roadside vending stall did this for more than 4 decades and put all his children through school, invested in houses and eventually giving each of his children a house of their own as they married. The town called him Uncle “Duck Rice” even after retirement.

4) An orchard farmer bought a large plot of land covered in junk and converted it to a fertile and productive fruit orchard was always referred to as the ‘Fruit Seller’ long after he had passed on his holdings to his son.

5) An apparent financial advisor entrepreneur by the name of Bernie Madoff was later found to have blown more than $50 billion of many people’s money in a Ponzi scheme. Now, how should he be known? Perhaps he could be known as the guy that pulled off a Ponzi or 50 billion dollar magician.

I’m sure you get the idea by now that the mindset you have acquired is who you are. If you wish to become a lobster fisherman, so be it. That is the life you have chosen. Yes, how about being a Private Bank Owner in a low tax off shore warm sea front jurisdiction? You could entertain wealthy clients all day on the beach or fishing from a boat. Now, wouldn’t that be a great entrepreneurial life and mindset!
