Purchasing power of a jar of coins

This was a story from many years ago that tells of the importance of financial freedom. The story highlights the small steps that can come to become something much bigger when you need it. Read the true story.

The Purchasing Power Of A Jar Of Coins.

My Jar Of Coins.
This simple thing jolted me with so many memories and tears filled my eyes. The purchasing power within was probably only enough to buy a simple meal for two at Swiss Chalet. But the meaning within was priceless.

I remember 10 years ago to the (Christmas) day, when the night was at its longest like last night – or tonight if you are so inclined, I was grateful for this very same jar as I look at it tonight.

You see, my little boy did not understand why we had not gone to his favourite Swiss Chalet restaurant in quite a while. And tonight he was famished. How could I tell him every penny we had had been taken away by someone very close to us and both of us were in effect close to being homeless? I was left with huge unbeknownst debts.

Then he asked me about that glass jar full of coins I had forgotten about. “There is enough money there, right Dad?” That night, we had the best meal together a father and son could ever wish for. Even the waitress gave us some little extras “For the boy,” she said.

The habit I had was to pick up the coins I find on the ground on my walks or other activities and put them all there in that glass jar. In some years, they fill fast, in others, only half full. This mini financial windfall is not a lot, but you will never know when a little financial habit will give you the freedom of a very important choice (from original article).
