Hurricane At The Shoe Store
I needed a pair of new walking shoes having worn mine out walking of course. The shoe store employees were flushed with overwork. It seems when kids come acalling for their new school shoes, a hurricane blows through the store. I looked at the mess left behind as I sat on the bench and then at the young lady trying in vain to keep the store at least like they had some paired shoes.
It was a tall order. Little hands and feet have made this store look like a mass of rainbow colours. But they were little shoes. There were little shoes everywhere. As the store clerk looked around in desperation, she caught sight of my slightly “I’m so sorry” look and promptly burst out laughing. “Quite a hurricane came through here”. “You’re not kidding,” she heaved. This is hurricane season after all I mused.
And I had thought that those little cheery kids just running out as I entered the shoe store were such little angels. Well, they are. But their energy takes some catching up with. Their mums were just barely managing to hold onto all those new shoes and run after them too.
Humour Restores
You don’t have to be a comedian. A little sense of humour goes a long way. I saw those mums and kids again after my purchase. They were all sitting quietly with a cup of coffee, looking exhausted and near to tears. The kids? Well, they were amusing themselves within a play area.
One of the mums was observed to have the right idea about supervising kids while recuperating. She called out to them “You’ll all play nice and have fun right?” Of course the reply from the little hurricanes were, “Yaaaay! Ha, ha, ha, ha….” What else?
I wasn’t long before the mums though of their little ‘hurricanes’ as little angels again as their smiles returned. In fact, they were laughing at the antics of the little ones.
Well, I smiled too as I had found a decent pair of shoes at a good price. It fit and supported my aching feet much better than its old battle worn predecessor. Hard work had worn out the old battle horse and I was actually a little sorry to see it go. But, like a prayer, I thanked my old pair of shoes and wished for many more great and fun adventures. Cheers to my happy feet.
