The hallmark of a true leader is when people look up to you and play follow the leader. Nature has that in-built structure in all of us. Just watch the children play that game and you’ll find it is such an amusing time. They follow because it is fun to learn something new. When minds are fully open and trusting, doing something is always on the side of fun and creativity.

Follow The Leader

They Have Become Leaders

It’s autumn and that cool breeze and frequent rains signal the migratory birds it’s time to head south. The spring chicks have all grown up. It’s now their turn to learn to lead. Is this all in built into their mental system? Not entirely. The geese and ducks have inbuilt tools like we all have. They can also access the energies of the universe. They know that it is time to head into warmer climes by heading south and not north at this time of the year.

I felt a sadness that things are coming to an end here at this beautiful pond. But really, wake up Rebecca, they are leaving on an adventure. New events always await the adventurous. Those who take it win. If they remain they will wither and die. Hence they practice and hone their expertise – fatten up, exercise their flight muscles, preen their feathers to perfection, fly in formation, join groups, learn all the calls, and start recognizing the group leader to follow. They learn all this from a leader they have chosen to follow even before they leave for the southern roosts!

Today I watch as they take off and land over the course of the afternoon in practice for the actual day when they leave winter behind. And I remembered as many were just little ones following their parents in little formations. They feed, they swim, they ford barriers and up and down streams in their daily adventures. Spring wasn’t so long ago.

Follow If You Can’t Lead

Sounds like a little scolding to so called wanna be leaders. Well, it is. When was the last time you have heard of a goose silly enough to lead his flight squadron into the arctic north at the turn of autumn? If that ever happened, natural selection would have offered many carnivores frozen dinners. As a leader, have you truly made your perfect dream into a plan of action that will have people want to follow you faithfully? In good faith simply means they will learn to benefit from your successful experiences of achievement.

To many dismayed people, those professing to be leaders have not learnt anything like to be such a person to be followed. But do you care enough to be mentored, even as you mentor those who depend on your wisdom?

I still keep closely linked to my mentors as I mentor those whom I know I can help achieve their dreams or goals. Why? Simply because, I am constantly learning, These mentors are as well as they have drummed these lessons well into my psyche. We eventually become a mastermind of sorts. They help me with their wisdom and I can sometimes offer them nuggets of useful ideas and information.

That is the way I have learnt to lead those who choose to follow me. It’s a relationship of listening to their problems or issues and helping them with resources and knowledge to my best ability or perhaps I find them answers. Then it is them listening to what I have to show them that which works well through experience.

Stop Faking Leadership

For those with leadership aspirations. Faking or winging leadership qualities will confound the people who look up to those would be leaders. Make very sure you know how and can jump the chasm before you teach others to do the same. It’s critical in this world of survival. You screw people’s lives up, they will never forgive you. Worse, you will be imparting a system of continued failure to them and yourself.

There are much worse consequences but I will not go into them. There will also be energy and continued mental issues too. However, if you have already been caught up in such a situation, find your way by finding the people who have what you want and emulating their system. Remember associating with people who have what you are trying to achieve? Create a great mentorship with them and you will become what you want as you think about it all the time. Your burning desire will see you through many hurdles. But remember, your mentors will be your guides to success and hurdles are just guideposts to better times. This is personal mastery of leadership.
