Being motivated often means being habitually driving yourself toward some noble goal like completing your PhD. However, if it is to be properly understood, motivation should not be affected by what society demands it must mean. I mean if dad sees you working your rear end off to become a manager, he assumes that you are motivated. If mum yells at you for being a lazy bum for being a couch potato, you are considered to lack motivation. Is this really correct?
You see, the fact that you are working so hard to become manager simply means you have a massive desire for a certain purpose. You then developed a set of habits that become the driving force and you appear “positively motivated”.
Now, will it be surprising if I said that lazy character is really also motivated? You see, he is also massively motivated. But in this case, it is to be a couch potato. But then, we don’t read minds and mum can’t understand his “negative motivation”. Why did he develop such a set of habits that set him on the couch so much?
Once you understand that there really isn’t such a thing as motivated and unmotivated, you can begin to work with people who appear to have that societal stigma of success or failure. You now understand that to get someone to be on the right purpose in their lives, then it really begins with what they desire to be.
And how do you begin by finding out what anyone would like to be? Very simply, do the simplest thing possible. ASK. Notice, both mum and dad simply assumed they knew according to societal norms. You see, more often than not, people appear lackadaisical because they see no way out of their own predicament. You can help by telling them the same thing you would do with them. Tell them to ASK. They can’t help but then think about what they want do something that they like. Hopefully, this will be more in keeping with the productive side of life.
Even extremely the busy person can benefit by asking themselves what they really want to achieve. Do they really know their purpose or are their massive actions really just an energy wasting habit? Without really understanding their own motivation, they will not be able to prioritize their actions.
Thus I hope I’ve helped you understand that it is our dominant desires that will develop our motivation to turn us into either a manager or a potato.
