If you’ve been into sales long enough, you’ve heard that stories sell and facts tell. In this article, I want to bring your attention to your most important client of all – YOU! Now, think of a prospect you want to sell to. Do you ply him with facts to help him make the decision to accept your product or service? Or will a great story convince him? Sales experts always tell us it is the great story that does the convincing. So it is with us. If your story has been one of sorrow, that’s the life you lead. The successful are full of success stories that have become facts of lives.
You Speak, So It Is

Create and Tell The Story You Want To Live
Beware your speech. Do you realise that when you speak, your mind has to form the ideas to support those words? The more often you repeat those words in that same pattern your mind wants to recreate the imagery as an experience. You will begin to have the supporting emotions and then you will feel the experience as a reality. In a sense, you have hypnotised yourself into thinking all that is real. Try it, automatic actions of your repeating words become justified habits.
Case in point. Soldiers are trained to automatically yell “SIR!” for anything that requires some acknowledgement. They have to snap to attention to a superior officer. They were first screamed at by some seemingly deranged NCO and it sinks in. It’s amazing how quickly this habit forms. Yes, coercion and fear of punishment is a strong encouragement. But many years later, that habit is still a normal situation.
Tell Your Story
The story you tell is the life you live. “But these are the facts of my life” you lament! I know. I know your story because you live it. That’s why the successful people know you. They are very highly attunes to what they say and what they let the people around them or the media know about them. You see, they want their story to be told as they want to live. Thus, they create the lives they desire to live.
“But how can anyone live a life they have yet to live? That’s fantasy.” Call it what you will. But you have been building your own fairy tale all your life. For example a dog scared you once. Therefore you have been telling the world a dog scared you and you are now terrified of dogs. Are all dogs terrifying? Actually you and the rest of the world know that most dogs are loveable creatures. So, what is your story?
Super successful people know that there are many messages and experiences that appear to be failures. But you must understand they choose to tell and remember the successful moments. They begin with the success they want and live it in their minds which form their experiences. Listen to them talk and you’ll realise they talk about what they want to accomplish as already done. And to cap it off, they promptly go out and get it done. Now, they have just created their desired facts. What a fantastic fairy tale billionaires have to tell. Or how about hearing the Olympian athletes’ tales of self conquest?
Changing Your Story
Time and again my mentors will almost jump all over me to change my story. If you’ve ever felt less than a super achiever, your words will be far less convincing. And unsurprisingly, your speech pattern will also alter course and start you on the path of failure. This is why one or more mentors are wonderful to have. Then also have a mastermind group which help its members maintain their paths to greatness.
You are accountable to yourself. Take charge of what you say. Be always mindful of your speech because it can tell what you are thinking. Have your thoughts strayed? If so, what have you been feeling? Are you emotions being hammered negatively by some experience you have had?
In my experience, the very best effort I can make to change my story is really a set of very simple habits. If you do them daily, you are like an invincible Jedi Knight of the Star Wars movies. You may have heard of them before, but I’ll drum them into you even more.
List of Daily Success Habits:
1) Read Selected Books (on self development, wealth, etc.);
2) Listen to Audios (as above);
3) Go to your related success events;
4) Mix with like minded people – a mastermind;
5) Get mentors;
6) Be willing to learn – like a disciple – always accepting knowledge.
